12.03.2024Digital Markets Act: ensure more freedom of choice for users online

Major digital companies such as Google, Apple, and Amazon control access to digital markets. These gatekeepers often impede competition and limit users’ freedom of choice. The Digital Markets Act (DMA) aims to change this. Major digital companies, which the European Commission has designated gatekeepers, are obliged to implement the DMA by 7 March. However, there are indications that some companies might try to circumvent the DMA. Their use of manipulative user interfaces or messages could prevent consumers from exercising their rights. Ramona Pop, Executive Director of the Federation of German Consumer Organisations (Verbraucherzentrale Bundesverband – vzbv), says the following:

11.03.2024Digital Markets Act: Apple and Google fail to comply with certain regulations

On the day the law took effect, the Federation of German Consumer Organisations (Verbraucherzentrale Bundesverband – vzbv) checked whether operators comply with selected DMA rules. The analysis shows that some obligations have not been fully implemented for Android and iPhone users.

04.12.2023 100 days of the Digital Services Act: consumer protection on online platforms still insufficient

For more than 100 days now, large online platforms and search engines, such as Google Search, Amazon, and TikTok, have had to implement regulations from the EU’s Digital Services Act.
